What NAPLAN tests
NAPLAN has four tests, sat in this order: Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language, then Numeracy.
Reading
Passages of literary and informational text, each followed by a cluster of questions on it.
Conventions of Language
Spelling, grammar and punctuation questions pitched at the year level.
Numeracy
Number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics and probability. Years 7 and 9 papers are split into calculator and non-calculator sections.
Writingcoming later
Not covered yet. Writing needs a prompt and a marking rubric rather than scored questions, and is being built separately.

All Grade 5 papersIn between NAPLAN years? Papers for Grade 4, Grade 6, Year 8 and Year 10 use the same format, so practice can carry on through the years with no test.
Using practice papers well
- Start with the free paper. Sit it early to find out where your child is, rather than guessing.
- Practise the gaps, not the whole test. Marking a paper on PrepNest shows which topics lost marks and links straight to practice on those topics.
- Save full, timed papers for the last few weeks. That is when pacing and stamina matter most.
- Keep it low-stakes. NAPLAN is a snapshot of how a student is going, not a pass-or-fail test, so calm practice beats cramming.
